Benefits of Furnace Cleaning
What are the Benefits of Furnace Cleaning?
Maintaining a clean furnace not only prevents a furnace outage that could leave you and your loved ones without heat, the benefits of furnace cleaning extend beyond that.

Save Energy - and Money
Dirty, clogged and unkempt furnaces use far more energy than their clean counterparts. Because they are constantly under strain, having higher energy bills every month is inevitable. In a time when we're all doing out best to be environmentally conscious - AND save our hard-earned money - you can cut these costs and conserve energy at the same time by simply requesting a Midwest Homes Services technician to have it inspected and cleaned.

Prolong the Life of the Furnace
Because a dirty furnace is under pressure, all its components are forced to work much harder than if it were clean. This shortens the lifespan of certain parts, which will eventually need to be replaced at high costs. It is therefore wiser to have the furnace cleaned in advance to avoid replacement expenses. New furnaces run into the thousands of dollars, so it's easier on your wallet to keep it maintained on a regular basis.

Increase Warmth and Comfort
At the end of the day, you need your furnace to provide the warmth and comfort you bought it to provide. It can only do this if it is running at its optimum performance. And to improve the efficiency of your furnace, it needs to be cleaned and maintained regularly by a qualified professional.

How Do I Know If My Furnace Needs Cleaning?
In addition to the peace of mind in getting regular cleaning done, it can be hard to tell whether a furnace is working properly or not. Fortunately, there are some obvious indicators that can help you identify glitches in your heating system.

Unusual Odors
It is not unusual for furnaces to emit a strange odor if you have not used it for some time. This smell usually lasts for an hour or two at most. However, if the odor does not dissipate, it might be a sign of a problem.

If the furnace produces a smoky odor, the problem could be caused by clogged filters or dirty ducts. This might sound like a problem you can clean up yourself, but it is advisable to contact a technician instead. Oftentimes, the odor has a gas-like smell to it. If this is the case, turn it off and wait for help to arrive.

Strange Sounds
If you have a new furnace, you might not yet be familiar with the sounds it makes. It is perfectly normal for a furnace to tick and click here and there. These sounds are usually caused by the thermostat and air blowing through the vents.

On the other hand, if you’ve had the furnace for a while and it makes sounds you haven’t heard before, this can be a sign of malfunction or damage. Any strange high-pitched sounds like crackling, squealing or grinding can point to a problem with the blower or shot bearings.

Sounds can also be subtle, like humming. Humming is a common sound made by a faulty blower motor and is equally alarming. If the sound is new to your ears, have your furnace cleaned.

Exterior Appearance
Dust and dirt are some of the primary indicators that you need furnace cleaning. They normally accumulate just on the exterior of the furnace but are sometimes lodged in the blower fan or burner compartment. Other signs you should look out for include rust and marks.

Below or Above Average Temperatures
Every furnace comes with a recommended temperature rise. This is the temperature of heat the furnace is designed to produce. Temperatures that fall under or exceed this rise may be signs that you’re due for furnace cleaning.

To determine the temperature rise, check the room temperature before you turn on the furnace. Then, get a functional thermometer and place it as close to the heat vent as you possibly can. Measure the temperature for a couple of minutes. Deduct the room temperature from the one in the heat vent.

If this final temperature does not correspond with one the manufacturer has provided, you need to have the furnace analyzed by professionals.
